Børsen Transforms Editorial Workflow with Superdesk

Dagbladet Børsen, Denmark's premier business newspaper, has successfully transitioned its content management system (CMS) from CUE  to Superdesk in a move designed to streamline Børsen’s editorial workflows and improve its content handling.

“As part of our digital first strategy we wanted a system that would not only simplify our editorial workflows but also offer the flexibility to scale with our future needs,” said Henrik Bødtcher, Børsen’s chief technology officer. “Superdesk provided us with exactly what we were looking for – a solution that streamlines content management, improves collaboration, and easily integrates with our custom front-end.”

Børsen is Denmark's largest business media outlet, delivering in-depth financial news, analysis, and commentary across print and digital platforms. Headquartered in Copenhagen, Børsen employs 230 full-time employees.

Børsens wanted to transition completely to a digital first strategy and to accomplish that Børsen made the decision to separate digital and print systems. Separating the systems will allow journalists to focus fully on digital content. Print no longer controls how Børsen produces content.

The change in strategy, together with the need for a more flexible CMS to better handle the growing demands from their content production processes, prompted Børsen to search for a partner who could support the process. After considering several options, Børsen turned to Superdesk for a customised set-up.

To facilitate the transition, Superdesk first provided Børsen with a staging environment to experiment with Superdesk and its associated tool, Publisher, which Børsen uses as an interface to manage homepage lists. The teams worked together to design new features that allow Børsen's editorial staff to define formatting and metadata more easily.

One of the key improvements was the simplification of Børsen's complex editorial workflow. With Superdesk, workflows have been reduced and streamlined, creating a faster, more efficient editorial process. The integration of saved searches and custom workspaces have also provided greater flexibility for content management.

An important new Superdesk feature – developed for this project and made available to all future users – is called “custom blocks.” Starting from Superdesk version 2.8, users can create custom snippets of content inside the editor pane, content such as lists and pull-quotes that will be surfaced in a published article.

Custom blocks are fully configurable in Superdesk, with the ability to contain only necessary formatting options and define the template for easier onboarding and operation. Moreover, custom blocks are appropriately marked in the code, making front-end integration easy.

Another significant enhancement was the ability to schedule and manage non-published content in content lists. Editorial teams can now draft articles, schedule them, and make them visible on the homepage and other aggregation pages once published — ensuring smoother planning and organisation.

Future plans include the development of a single sign-on (SSO) set-up for improved user management.

“We’re excited to continue collaborating with Børsen and helping them meet their evolving needs,” said Ivan Jelić, a Superdesk senior project manager. “Great teamwork, their proactive approach, keen interest in pushing the boundaries of editorial technology, and commitment to upstreaming custom features make them an ideal partner.”
